Local Knoxvillians, don’t miss a Thanksgiving storytime tomorrow at 11am at Union Ave Books! We’ll be reading Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet which gives the fun story behind the big balloons in the Macy’s parade. We’ll also hopefully be reading the Devlins Cranberry Thanksgiving which is a marvelous vintage classic about a cranberry bread recipe and an attempted theft! See you there!

This book is sort of a strange review for me. This is a story from my childhood that I love simply because of that. Grandpa’s Chair is a story about love, grandparents, and loss. Read the full post…
The Monsters’ Monster
Written and Illustrated by Patrick McDonnell | 2012
Today’s book review is a brand-spanking new book by Patrick McDonnell. This is a little later than I anticipated, but I feel it should still be highlighted as I really like it! I’m not a big fan of Halloween. However, I recognize that a lot of people enjoy this holiday and I do like to highlight books that I actually like and fit well with this theme. So, from the marvelous creator of the MUTTS comic strip, and many other lovely picture books, comes this new tale about The Monsters’ Monster. Read the full post…
“There’s a child in every adult, and when that child dies, it’s a death for the adult too. So I do these books for my own pleasure as much as for the children’s pleasure. LouLou and I write for the children we were.”
It’s going to be a loud storytime tomorrow with another double feature. We’ll be starting off discussing all kinds of loud noises with The Loud Book! by Deborah Underwood and Renata Liwska and then we’ll settle in for a long, wild & crazy narrative about what happens on The Day the Cow Sneezed by James Flora. These are some of my favorite books folks, so don’t miss it tomorrow at 11am at Union Ave Books!

Here are a few I’ve come up with that I think would be relatively simple to create and unique as well. (Don’t forget to check thrift stores for supplies!) Read the full post…

This is the second book we read a few weeks ago for storytime. Another tale about a beloved stuffed friend and his reoccurring disappearance. In this book we have a little boy named Willy, a sock monkey named Bobo and a mischievous cuddling cat named Earl. Read the full post…
“I’ll never forget the experience of sitting in a beloved lap and having a whole world open before me: a world brought to life by the pictures and the grown-up’s voice. That wonder is what I want to recreate in my own books.”
