Let’s Read Three: Summer Fruit Books!

FruitThreeTitle

One of the many things that I love about living in NYC is that summer actually lasts through August. So even though my social media feeds are flooded with friends’ back-to-school pictures and posts, we still have a month of summer left. Hurrah! And I was even more delighted when we recently arrived back from vacation and discovered that our favorite summer fruit was still in season and well-priced. Double hurrah! This calls for a post. A Let’s Read Three post about summer fruit books, of course.

These three are some of our favorite books, that include fruit too. Jamberry would definitely be a friend to this group. Two of them are vintage and most likely classics in some houses. The third is a book that I have meant to post for a couple years now. It’s time. Let’s read some fruit books! Read the full post…

Let’s Read A Pile Of Dragon Books, Part 1

Excuse the somewhat oddball post here. I recently finished leading an after-school class/storytime of sorts in the South Bronx. It was a five week experiment group that was equally exciting and exhausting. It was a test run to see what kind of thing we could come up and what would work. I chose a dragon theme that included a chapter book to read a couple chapters from each week, and also picture books to supplement for a little storytime each week. I want to try and share snapshots of the time as it is about reading, completely took over my time recently, and might tickle the fancy of those dragon lovers out there. In this first part, I’ll tell you about the chapter book we read and the activities we ended up doing around it. In the second part, hopefully coming this week as well, I will share the dragon picture books we read and loved.

Our chapter book for this test cycle was the classic My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett, illustrated by Ruth Chrisman Gannett, 1948.

My Father's Dragon

This book is so fascinating. It is only ten chapters long, has an excellent rhythm to its pacing, and somehow stays incredibly exciting and unique despite its age. Read the full post…

25 Days – Book 10: My Christmas Treasury

25 Christmas Banner 2014

Here we are, ten days into our Christmas book countdown. Today’s book is from the 40s, but I finally acquired this copy just last week! I have been searching for this book for over a year, purely based on a few illustrations I’ve seen circulating on the internet. I have to say that I am not disappointed. This is a beauty. A collection of Christmas stories, poems and songs in A Big Golden Book, take a peek at My Christmas Treasury with pictures by Lowell Hess, 1947.
