2019 Favs – Book 7: The Piano Recital

There are some books that you have to read first before you form an opinion, and that is generally the accepted rule, you know the whole “don’t judge a book by its cover” thing. But occasionally there are books that grab you from the very start. Books that you just know are going to run away with your heart or your imagination or your emotions. I’m happy to say that today’s book was one of those books for me. I spied this on the lower shelf of a bookstore and I couldn’t walk away from it. I just had to pick it up and read it and it didn’t let me down. A delightful story about a little girl’s first recital and her exciting and magical discovery that completely calms her nerves. Take a peek at The Piano Recital by Akiko Miyakoshi, 2019.

2019 Favs – Book 3: You Are My Friend

It is apparently the year of Mister Rogers, and I’m completely OK with it. While the HBO documentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbor came out late last year, 2018; the newest Mister Rogers’ movie, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, arrived in theaters November 22 with Tom Hanks in the role of Mister Rogers. The picture book world is not be left out of a trend, and I’m so grateful it is following this one! I have two new picture books this year celebrating this wonderful man and the legacy of an amazing show he created. First up today is a sweet biography about Rogers from his childhood and some of the inspiration that led him to create his famous show. Take a peek at You Are My Friend by Aimee Reid, pictures by Matt Phelan, 2019.

Favorite New Picture Books 2019

December 1 has arrived! Wow. This year seems to have flown, and yet, it seems so long in many ways. Once again, the year has come and gone without a lot of posts. Also, per usual, my stack of new amazing picture books is gigantic. So many great books continue to be published and I never have enough time to talk about them all! I’m excited to bring back my new December series: Favorite New Picture Books of the year! Last year’s list was so fun to make and I heard from many people how helpful it was. Yay!

I have at least 20 books that hit several key points for me this year: beautiful, memorable, and most importantly – books that I would highly recommend gifting this holiday season. It’s hard to go wrong gifting a book. Whether you are looking for Christmas, birthdays, or just thinking of someone special; these books are great new finds from the year. I can’t wait to share all of these with you! I’ll share one each day with a brief synopsis, why I like it, and who I think would love to receive it. I also love to add some complimentary gifts too, in case you like to go themed and give a little group of items.

Join me this Advent season and celebrate the year in books. You can find all of this year’s books at this tag. And let me know if you are looking for any specific type of book or person. I love the hunt! I’ll be back tomorrow with the first book or two!

P.S. If you’ve been around here for long, you know that I used to do a Christmas picture book countdown until Christmas Day. If you are looking for great Christmas books, old and new(ish), check out these five years of countdowns: 20122013201420152017.

25 Days – Book 25: Paul Writes (A Letter)

It is December 30 and I’m squeaking in my last of the 25 New Favorite Picture Books. Another new one from 2018, this is an interesting book to end the year on, but I love it for many different reasons. A book about the Apostle Paul and the many letters he wrote for the New Testament which, as the book claims, changed the world. Take a look at Paul Writes (a letter) by Chris Raschka, 2018.

25 Days – Book 22: After The Fall

So I realize I dropped off in the countdown to Christmas… BUT, in actuality, this wasn’t a countdown to Christmas, it was fully intended as 25 Days of Favorite New Picture Books all hopefully helpful in the season of giving. But the season of giving books is never truly over! I made the hard decision to stop posting the last four when family arrived in NYC to celebrate Christmas with us. People come first and I wanted and needed to be with my family. But, I still have four amazing books to share… and we have four days left in 2018. So come back and join me in seeing my favorite picture books of 2018 (and a few 2017 that I’m still obsessing over too!)

Today’s book is one more favorite from 2017. A stunningly beautiful book about dreams, disappointment and overcoming fear. This book will inspire and move you. Take a look at After the Fall by Dan Santat, 2017.
