December 1 has arrived! Wow. This year seems to have flown, and yet, it seems so long in many ways. Once again, the year has come and gone without a lot of posts. Also, per usual, my stack of new amazing picture books is gigantic. So many great books continue to be published and I never have enough time to talk about them all! I’m excited to bring back my new December series: Favorite New Picture Books of the year! Last year’s list was so fun to make and I heard from many people how helpful it was. Yay!
I have at least 20 books that hit several key points for me this year: beautiful, memorable, and most importantly – books that I would highly recommend gifting this holiday season. It’s hard to go wrong gifting a book. Whether you are looking for Christmas, birthdays, or just thinking of someone special; these books are great new finds from the year. I can’t wait to share all of these with you! I’ll share one each day with a brief synopsis, why I like it, and who I think would love to receive it. I also love to add some complimentary gifts too, in case you like to go themed and give a little group of items.
Join me this Advent season and celebrate the year in books. You can find all of this year’s books at this tag. And let me know if you are looking for any specific type of book or person. I love the hunt! I’ll be back tomorrow with the first book or two!
P.S. If you’ve been around here for long, you know that I used to do a Christmas picture book countdown until Christmas Day. If you are looking for great Christmas books, old and new(ish), check out these five years of countdowns: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017.
Happy first day of December! This year has flown by and very little blog posts have happened unfortunately. I have a massive stack of new releases that I have been so excited to share, and yet the days continue to go by and I haven’t shared any of them! If you’ve been around here for long, you know that I always do a Christmas picture book countdown until Christmas Day. Five years I’ve done this: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 (don’t ask what happened in 2016 – I don’t remember). That is 125 different Christmas books. Whew! While more and more Christmas books come out each year, I have tired a bit of always only sharing those. And really, how many more Christmas books can I collect! So I’m switching it up this year. In an effort to share all the wonderful new books that have come out this year (and possibly a couple from last year too), I’m doing a Favorite New Picture Book countdown instead! All of these books are (relatively) new releases and would make fantastic gifts! Maybe these will help if you are looking for great books to give for a holiday, birthday, or any reason in the next couple months. I hope this helps and I cannot wait to share all the new beauties with you. I’ll share one each day with a brief synopsis, why I like it, and who I think would love to receive it. Hope to see you each day and let me know if you are looking for any specific kinds of books. I love to help!
Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s been a long quiet stretch here since Christmas Day. While I’m not one to collect many Valentine’s themed books, I couldn’t help but grab a few pictures of three of my favorite vintage Valentine books. These books are harder to find but you know I love a good trio, and these three are all quite different in their approach to this holiday. (I’ve been pondering a different format for posts on occasion, so bear with my as I try this square, quicker format today.) Let’s read three (vintage) books about Valentine’s Day! Read the full post…
It’s that time of year! I took a true holiday last year and didn’t do my usual 25 picture books countdown to Christmas. It was lovely to step away for a bit, but I’m ready. So here we go! I will do my best to keep each day short with just a quick post about the book and a picture or two.
And if you want to check out past years: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015. Happy December 1!
An eclectic stack of picture books all chosen for one specific reason: bedroom illustrations!
I have seriously missed blogging! I’m sorry for my consistent absence lately, but all free time is being poured into my book. Yay! The past couple weeks I have been working on background brainstorming for my characters and I needed some serious picture book bedroom inspiration. I filled Pinterest with some ideas, both illustrated and real, and then I realized… this is an excellent thing to post about. It gets the jumbled thoughts and observations from my head into written form and serves for a fun research project. This is in no way exhaustive, (though reading this post will be!) but simply includes every book I currently have on hand that I could immediately think of a bedroom that I liked for some reason or another. So here we go: great illustrated picture book bedrooms! Read the full post…
December 1 has arrived and it is time to celebrate the coming of Christmas with an advent of sorts. Continuing my tradition for its fourth year, I am now kicking off the 25 Days of Christmas Children’s Picture Books, 2015! I have quite a selection of brand new, vintage, and in-between Christmas picture books to share. I will do my best to keep each day short with just a quick post about the book and a picture or two. I hope you’ll read along.
And if you want, check out past years: 2012, 2013, 2014! There are so many great Christmas picture books out there! Happy holidays!
Today I finally continue our superhero celebration with Part 2: a superhero picture book list. As you can imagine given the subject matter, superhero books abound. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but more a sampling of the ones that fit the broad topic covering I was trying to achieve. So let’s get started with superhero picture books! I can hardly believe it is that time of year again. Christmas season has begun! Oh, how things have changed in the past year with our big move, new baby, and even all my new book finds! I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever run out of books to do a picture book countdown until Christmas. It is hard to believe there are so many lovely Christmas-themed picture books out there, and my goodness, there are so many renditions of “The Night Before Christmas!” Getting this in late on December 1, I’m ready to try my hand at another year. I hope you’ll join along! And if you are looking for more Christmas book ideas, be sure to check out my 2012 countdown and 2013 countdown too! Let the Advent season begin!
February 14th is almost upon us and while that day is just another date to some, a birthday to many people, and International Book Giving Day to others – most people know the day as Valentine’s Day. Last year I struggled to make a list of themed books as I just never really get into this particular holiday, but there really are a lot of lovely books that are love-themed, heart-themed or especially specific to the day. So, I have pulled a few of my new favorites and we’ve been reading them constantly this week in great enjoyment. Reading is a good cause anytime and love is worth being celebrated, so why not have some love-themed books on the agenda for the week! Allow me to help you find some great ones. Here are 10 children’s picture books for Valentine’s Day to help you get in the loving mood. Read the full post…
December 1 has arrived! I may be setting myself up for failure here, but I’ve decided to attempt another Christmas book advent list. Last year’s was so much fun and quite inspiring for my book enjoyment and writing, so let’s give it another go. I’m hopeful that I’ll hit every day and my accumulated list includes some books I didn’t get to share last year, some new to me ones, and even some hot-off-the-press 2013 editions from my favorite bookstore. I hope you’ll follow along and maybe discover some new Christmas picture books to enjoy yourself and with the little ones in your life.
A collection of 75 songs from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and The Children’s Corner, this vibrantly illustrated book is such a delight! Enjoy A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood with lyrics by Fred Rogers and illustrations by Luke Flowers, 2019.
It is apparently the year of Mister Rogers, and I’m completely OK with it. Two new picture books this year celebrating this wonderful man and the legacy of an amazing show he created. First up today is a sweet biography about Rogers from his childhood and some of the inspiration that led him to create his famous show. Take a peek at You Are My Friend by Aimee Reid, pictures by Matt Phelan, 2019.
A book in rhyme that feels like a gift. A book that encourages and equips. A book for a laugh and comfort. A book for when you need to take a risk or act on a big dream; or when you are just thinking about a risk or a dream. A book that gives you that soft landing and the assurance for coming home. A book Just In Case You Want To Fly by Julie Fogliano and Christian Robinson.
If I had to choose a favorite from the year, this would be it. A story about a little girl’s pet tortoise and a seemingly impossible endeavor he undertakes. Be charmed by Truman by Jean Reidy, illustrated by Lucy Ruth Cummins, 2019.
